West Africa Gender and Market Initiative: Review of literature and secondary data

The first phase of the West Africa Gender and Markets Initiative is comprised of a review of relevant secondary data and information, as well as tools and resources for assessing gender dynamics and empowerment in agricultural markets and value chains. The results informed the development of the case study research conducted during the second phase of the initiative.

Main findings include:

  • WFP and partner market assessments do not include gender dynamics and women’s empowerment in markets in West Africa. This is true to varying extents at all stages of the assessment process (data collection, analysis and reporting), with the largest gaps in analysis and report.
  • Secondary data available on key indicators of gender equality and women’s empowerment in market activities is only available at the country-level, which fails to meet geographical specificity requirements to inform targeted humanitarian response.
