Syntax library

Inspecting syntax files is the best way to work out exactly how variables and indicators have been built.   That's why we've started posting syntax files for many of the standard VAM indicators.

Keep posted as there's more on the way!

The table below contains syntax files which were used to construct food security indicators.  It also contains the corresponding datasets for your reference.

The 72-hour Assessment Approach: A guide for vulnerability and spatial analysis in sudden-onset disasters

This document, 72-hour assessment approach: a guide for vulnerability and spatial analysis in sudden-onset disasters, was developed based on the experience of the VAM Units in WFP Regional Bureaux for Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean, who applied this approach in rapid emergency assessments between 2015-2017. It has benefited from peer review mechanisms with technical specialists from various HQ divisions and knowledge partners.

Creation of a Wealth Index

Wealth is the value of all natural, physical and financial assets owned by a household, reduced by its liabilities. Household wealth is a measure commonly used in food security assessments. It gives an idea of households’ ability to access food, the severity of food insecurity and gives information about the economic situation of the food insecure. It is used to differentiate between the poorer and the wealthier households in food security related indicators, such as food consumption, and thereby provides information on how to target the food insecure.

Conducting Food Security Assessments using Household Expenditure Surveys (HES)

Although it is not their main objective, most national household expenditure surveys (HES) generate accessible and reliable food security information. To date, however, WFP has rarely used these rich data sources for conducting food security analysis. The purpose of this guide is to familiarise with the largely untapped pool of food security information available from HES datasets.

Geo-referenced Real-time Acquisition of Statistics Platform (GRASP)

The Geo-referenced Real-time Acquisition of Statistics Platform (GRASP) is an application that allows questionnaire design, data collection, transmission and analysis in real-time through the use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It consists of the following applications:

New Indicator: Alert for Price Spikes

The Alert for Price Spikes (or ALPS)  has arrived.  And with it, comes this excellent new technical guidance note.

But what is the ALPS?   It is a new price indicator within WFP's food price database.

And what does it do?  A few things.  The ALPS indicator:

CARI tutorial: How to conduct the CARI

This tutorial gives a general overview of the CARI (Consolidated Approach for Reporting Indicators of Food Security).

The CARI tutorial introduces you to the CARI and the CARI algorithm, and will show you how:

Introducing the CARI (Consolidated Approach for Reporting Indicators of Food Security)

The Consolidated Approach for Reporting Indicators of Food Security (or CARI)  is a WFP method used to analyse and report the level of food insecurity within a population.

VAM Questionnaires

Designing a food security survey?  Well, to help you out, we've complied a selection of past VAM questionnaires for your reference (see table below).

Also, this presentation on questionnaire design covers many really important things to consider when putting together your questionnaire.  Enjoy!

The VAM Presentation Library

Where can I access past VAM training presentations?  Right here!  We've collected a variety of presentations and placed them all here for you to download.
